Improved wear resistance, anti-frictional properties and temperature resistance are only a few of the advantages of the gas nitriding process. The extremely low-distortion process prevents dimensional changes as a result of the heat treatment and also enables the partial treatment of components. In addition, the corrosion resistance and anti-seizure properties can also be improved in a subsequent oxidation process.

Nitriding is a thermochemical treatment process in which the surface of the components is enriched with nitrogen. This results in the formation of nitrides, which increases the surface hardness. In gas carbonitriding, carbon is also supplied in addition to nitrogen. This process is used for low-alloyed and unalloyed materials and is suitable for components that have been machined to finished dimensions. Enrichment of the surface layer with nitrogen or nitrogen and carbon improves the strength behaviour under static and vibrating loads, as well as the wear behaviour and corrosion behaviour. A special advantage is that the nitriding and carbonitriding processes are carried out at temperatures below 600°C. This prevents structural transformation and consequential changes in dimensions and shape.
